Emphatic concession (tot)

Emphatic Concession with "Tot"

To emphasize that an action happens despite an opposing condition, Romanian pairs a concessive clause with the adverb tot in the main clause. In these dramatic geological scenarios, tot translates to "still," "anyway," or "nevertheless."

The first part of the sentence sets up the obstacle using a conjunction like deși (although). The main clause then delivers the contrasting outcome, placing tot directly before the verb.

Although it is cold, the geyser still erupts.
Deși e frig, gheizerul tot erupe.
Although it's snowing, the thermal spring is still warm.
Deși ninge, izvorul termal tot e cald.
Although it's old, the volcano still erupts.
Deși e vechi, vulcanul tot erupe.

If the main verb is negative, tot is placed right before the negative marker.

Although Radu waited a lot, the geyser still didn't gush.
Deși Radu a așteptat mult, gheizerul tot n-a țâșnit.

Other Concessive Triggers

This emphatic tot structure works identically with other concessive phrases setting up the condition, such as chiar dacă (even if), cu toate că (even though), or the preposition în ciuda (despite).

Even if it's dangerous, Maria still has to explore the crater.
Chiar dacă e periculos, Maria tot trebuie să exploreze craterul.
Although we are tired, we still have to see the thermal crater.
Cu toate că suntem obosiți, tot trebuie să vedem craterul termal.
Despite the rain, the magma still bubbles.
În ciuda ploii, magma tot clocotește.
