Eco-Friendly Lifestyles

Carbon Footprint and Pollution

Adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle starts with being aware of our impact on the environment. When discussing sustainability in Romanian, you will often talk about reducing your "carbon footprint" (amprenta de carbon) and avoiding things that are heavily polluting (poluant).

Elena tries to reduce the carbon footprint.
Elena încearcă să reducă amprenta de carbon.
The car is extremely polluting and increases the carbon footprint.
Mașina este extrem de poluantă și crește amprenta de carbon.

Reusable Alternatives

One of the easiest ways to go green is to swap single-use items for reusable (reutilizabil) ones. Whether it is bringing your own coffee container (recipientul) or taking a canvas bag (sacoșa de pânză) to the grocery store, small habits make a big difference.

I bought a reusable container for coffee.
Am cumpărat un recipient reutilizabil pentru cafea.
I always use a canvas bag when I go to the market.
Folosesc mereu o sacoșă de pânză când merg la piață.

Composting and Biodegradables

When disposing of waste, it is important to separate materials that can break down naturally. Items like cardboard are biodegradable (biodegradabil), and you can collect (a colecta) organic (organic) waste to create nutrient-rich compost (compostul) for your garden.

Cardboard is a biodegradable material.
Cartonul este un material biodegradabil.
We collect organic waste for compost.
Noi colectăm deșeurile organice pentru compost.

Reducing Waste

The ultimate goal of an eco-friendly lifestyle is to stop wasting resources. The Romanian verb for "to waste" is a risipi. You can use it to talk about wasting food, water, or energy.

Unfortunately, people waste water.
Din păcate, oamenii risipesc apa.
