Demonstratives of identity (același...)

"The Same" (Același)

To say two things are "the same," Romanian uses the demonstrative același. Like "the other" (celălalt), it typically sits right before the noun and must agree with it in gender and number. It can also act as a pronoun, standing in for the noun entirely.

GenderSingularPlural
Masculine / Neuteracelașiaceiași (masculine only)
Feminineaceeașiaceleași (feminine / neuter)

Notice the subtle spelling difference for feminine nouns in the singular: aceeași.

I would like a coffee with the same taste.
Aș vrea o cafea cu același gust.
We repeat the same routine.
Noi repetăm aceeași rutină.
The blue cars go in the same direction.
Mașinile albastre merg în aceeași direcție.

Plurals: "The Same Ones"

When talking about multiple items or people, be careful with the masculine plural aceiași. It looks and sounds very similar to the masculine singular, but is spelled with an i in the middle and pronounced with a slight "y" sound.

For feminine and neuter plurals, use aceleași.

I saw the same people at the museum.
Am văzut aceiași oameni la muzeu.
He repeated the same mistakes.
El a repetat aceleași greșeli.
