Correlative clauses (nu numai că... dar și...)

To say "not only... but also..." when connecting two entire clauses, use nu numai că... dar și....

While nu numai... dar și... is used to link nouns or adjectives, connecting clauses—where each half of the sentence has a conjugated verb—requires adding că (that) right after nu numai.

Nu numai că ea menține greutatea, dar și stimulează metabolismul.

The Alternative: "Ci și"

Instead of dar și, you will frequently hear ci și. In this structure, they mean exactly the same thing and are completely interchangeable.

Nu numai că dieta prelungește viața, ci și crește vitalitatea.
