Concessive-conditional clauses (oricine, orice)

When setting up robust cybersecurity protocols, you have to account for every possible threat. In English, we describe these overarching rules with phrases like "whoever tries to enter" or "whatever they might do."

In Romanian, you can build these concessive-conditional clauses by combining an indefinite pronoun or adverb with the conditional mood.

Indefinite Words with "Ori-"

You can form indefinite words by attaching the prefix ori- to basic question words. This translates to the English "-ever" suffix:

  • orice (whatever / anything)
  • oricine (whoever / anyone)
  • oriunde (wherever / anywhere)

Forming the Condition

To express that a strict protocol applies no matter what happens, start your clause with one of these indefinite words and follow it with a verb in the conditional mood (using the helper verbs aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar).

Whatever your boss might say, this protocol is severe.
Orice ar zice șeful tău, acest protocol este sever.
Whoever would want to access my server needs a long password.
Oricine ar dori să acceseze serverul meu are nevoie de o parolă lungă.

Notice how the conditional mood (ar zice, ar dori) adds the hypothetical layer of "might say" or "would want," showing that the main rule applies regardless of the specific action.

"Orice" with Nouns

While oricine always stands alone as a pronoun representing people, orice can also act as an adjective. You can place it directly before a noun to mean "whatever [noun]."

Whatever file you might send, the message is encrypted, so nobody can intercept it.
Orice fișier ai trimite, mesajul este criptat, deci nimeni nu îl poate intercepta.

Covering Every Angle

You can use this exact same structure to talk about hypothetical locations. By using oriunde, you establish that the physical or digital location does not change the system's response.

Wherever a breach might appear, our system monitors it immediately.
Oriunde ar apărea o breșă, sistemul nostru o monitorizează imediat.

Because the first clause sets up an unpredictable or hypothetical threat, the second half of the sentence naturally states the inevitable security measure or unbreakable rule.

Whoever might steal your password cannot compromise the authentication.
Oricine ar fura parola ta, nu poate compromite autentificarea.
