Concessive Clauses with "oricât de"
In Romanian, use oricât de ("no matter how") followed by an adjective or adverb to express that something is true regardless of degree or intensity.
| no matter how | oricât de |
The verb in these clauses is usually in the conditional mood (often ar + infinitive) or the subjunctive mood (using să).
| No matter how hard it might be, we will escape from this room. | Oricât de greu ar fi, vom evada din această cameră. |
| Look for the clue, no matter how well it might be hidden! | Căutați indiciul, oricât de bine ar fi ascuns! |
When followed by an adjective, the adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun it describes. Notice how complex becomes complexă to match the feminine noun enigma.
| No matter how complex the enigma might be, we must solve it. | Oricât de complexă ar fi enigma, trebuie să o rezolvăm. |
Here is an example using the subjunctive mood (să pară) instead of the conditional:
| Try these codes, no matter how strange they may seem! | Încercați aceste coduri, oricât de ciudate să pară! |
| No matter how long the code might be, we will decipher it. | Oricât de lung ar fi codul, îl vom descifra. |
