At the Florist

Bring color to your Romanian vocabulary by learning how to talk about flowers. Whether you are buying a gift or admiring a garden, these words will help you navigate a florist's shop.

The Shop and the Expert

Let's start with where you buy the flowers. A flower shop is florăria. The expert who works there, preparing and selling the bouquets, is florarul (the florist). Notice how both words share the same root!

The flower shop we go to is on my street.
Florăria la care mergem este pe strada mea.
The florist I'm talking about has fresh flowers.
Florarul despre care vorbesc are flori proaspete.

When you walk into a flower shop, you will immediately recognize some classic blooms. The most romantic of these is trandafirul (the rose).

During the spring, you will also see laleaua (the tulip) and garoafa (the carnation).

The little girl is holding the tulip you admire.
Fetița ține laleaua pe care o admiri.
The grandfather bought some white carnations for the grandmother.
Bunicul a cumpărat niște garoafe albe pentru bunica.

Elegant Blooms

If you are looking for something a bit more exotic or elegant to put in a vase, you might ask the florist for orhideea (the orchid) or crinul (the lily).

The teacher put an orchid in her vase.
Profesoara a pus o orhidee în vaza sa.
The lily in my garden grows very naturally.
Crinul din grădina mea crește foarte natural.

Botanical Details and Senses

To describe your flowers in more detail, you need some basic botanical vocabulary. Be careful when handling roses, as you might get pricked by ghimpele (the thorn).

This thorn stung me when I touched the rose.
Acest ghimpe m-a înțepat când am atins trandafirul.

The soft, colorful part of the flower is petala (the petal).

A yellow petal falls softly onto the table.
O petală galbenă cade ușor pe masă.

Finally, one of the best parts of buying fresh flowers is enjoying mirosul (the smell).

I really like the sweet smell of the carnation.
Îmi place mult mirosul dulce al garoafei.
