Expressing Routines with "Usually" and "Sometimes"
Romanian adverbs of frequency like de obicei (usually) and uneori (sometimes) are very flexible. They can appear at the beginning of a sentence or right after the verb.
| Usually, I wake up early. | De obicei, mă trezesc devreme. |
| Sometimes we want to sleep a lot. | Uneori vrem să dormim mult. |
| He sometimes feels tired after work. | El se simte uneori obosit după serviciu. |
"Often", "Always", and "Rarely"
Adverbs like adesea (often), întotdeauna (always), and rar (rarely) typically follow the verb directly.
| I often run in the park in the morning. | Alerg adesea în parc dimineața. |
| My friend always jokes with us. | Prietenul meu glumește întotdeauna cu noi. |
| The professor rarely jokes, but he smiles often. | Profesorul glumește rar, dar zâmbește des. |
With reflexive verbs, the adverb still follows the verb. It never goes between the reflexive pronoun and the verb.
| Before the exam, I always want to rest. | Înainte de examen, vreau întotdeauna să mă odihnesc. |
| We rest very rarely on the weekend. | Ne odihnim foarte rar în weekend. |
The Double Negative: "Never"
Expressing "never" in Romanian requires a double negative. Place nu (not) before the verb and niciodată (never) after it.
| I never arrive late to the interview. | Nu întârzii niciodată la interviu. |
Reflexive verbs follow the exact same pattern: nu + reflexive pronoun + verb + niciodată.
| The boy never gets bored at home. | Băiatul nu se plictisește niciodată acasă. |
