Beyond "Foarte": Absolute Superlatives
When foarte (very) isn't strong enough, elevate your descriptions with lexical absolute superlatives. Place nespus de ("unspeakably") directly before the adjective or adverb you want to emphasize.
| The view is unspeakably beautiful from this balcony. | Priveliștea este nespus de frumoasă din acest balcon. |
For something that completely exceeds normal limits, use din cale afară de ("exceedingly").
| The view that we photographed was exceedingly spectacular. | Priveliștea pe care am fotografiat-o era din cale afară de spectaculoasă. |
Evaluating Your Stay
For a formal intensifier, use extrem de ("extremely").
While these superlative phrases never change form, the adjective that follows them still must agree in gender and number with the noun it describes.
| Their stay was extremely disappointing. | Șederea lor a fost extrem de dezamăgitoare. |
| For this stay, one pays an exceedingly high price. | Pentru această ședere se plătește un preț din cale afară de mare. |
Critiquing the Experience
These superlatives give serious weight to complaints, pairing well with strong descriptive adjectives like mediocru (mediocre) or arogant (arrogant).
| The wine that the lady recommended to us was extremely mediocre. | Vinul pe care ni l-a recomandat doamna era extrem de mediocru. |
| The hotel manager was exceedingly arrogant with us. | Șefa hotelului a fost din cale afară de arogantă cu noi. |
Notice how the superlatives intensify highly critical adjectives like mizerabil (filthy), lent (slow), and înghesuit (cramped).
| The carpet that we saw was unspeakably filthy. | Covorul pe care l-am văzut era nespus de mizerabil. |
| The service at this terrace is extremely slow. | Servirea la această terasă este extrem de lentă. |
| The room that we received was unspeakably cramped. | Camera pe care am primit-o era nespus de înghesuită. |
