A proposta está aceite?

Questions & Answers about A proposta está aceite?

Is aceite one of the irregular past participles?
Yes! It comes from the verb aceitar (to accept). While you might expect the regular form aceitado, Portuguese uses this shorter, irregular form aceite when treating the word like an adjective to say something is accepted.
Since A proposta is feminine, why isn't the adjective spelled aceita?
Because aceite ends in the letter e, it has the same form for both masculine and feminine words. It works just like adjectives such as grande or inteligente. If we were talking about multiple proposals, you would just add an s to make it aceites.
Why do we use está instead of é?
We use está (from the verb estar) because being accepted is a result or a state that the proposal is currently in. If we used é (from the verb ser), it would describe an ongoing passive action, sounding like the proposal is currently in the process of being accepted.
