Rejecting Reasons with "Não que"

To clarify that an assumed reason isn't the actual cause of a situation, use não que (not that). Because it introduces a denied reality, it always triggers the subjunctive.

  • Use the imperfect subjunctive (e.g., fosse) to reject an assumption about the past:
Not that the resignation was a surprise, was it?
Não que a demissão fosse uma surpresa, pois não?
  • Use the present subjunctive (e.g., seja, garanta) for current situations or general facts. These statements are often paired with mas (but) to introduce the actual reason:
Not that our environment is toxic, but I am dissatisfied.
Não que o nosso ambiente seja tóxico, mas estou insatisfeito.
Not that the progression guarantees happiness, but I do not want to stay stagnated.
Não que a progressão garanta a felicidade, mas não quero ficar estagnado.
Not that the job is bad, but the undervalued employee ends up having a burnout.
Não que o trabalho seja mau, mas o funcionário desvalorizado acaba por ter um esgotamento.

Even without an explicit mas, the contrast is implied by context:

Not that she aspires to a lot of money.
Não que ela ambicione muito dinheiro.
Not that a monotonous job is always bad.
Não que um trabalho monótono seja sempre mau.
