Establishing Context
When discussing sensitive negotiations, outline the facts before reformulating them. Phrases like dado que (given that), visto que (seeing that), or já que (since) establish the current state of affairs.
| Since the negotiation failed, the diplomat is annoyed. | Dado que a negociação falhou, o diplomata está chateado. |
| Seeing that there is no consensus, the ambassador left. | Visto que não há consenso, o embaixador saiu. |
In Other Words
To avoid ambiguity, use the discourse marker por outras palavras (in other words) to rephrase a point simply and directly.
| In other words, your perspective is different. | Por outras palavras, a tua perspetiva é diferente. |
| In other words, since there is no consensus, the negotiation failed. | Por outras palavras, já que não há consenso, a negociação falhou. |
Proposing Solutions
When navigating a conflict, you will frequently use the verb propor (to propose). Because it expresses influence over someone else, it requires que followed by a verb in the subjunctive mood.
| The diplomat proposes that the meeting be tomorrow. | O diplomata propõe que a reunião seja amanhã. |
| In other words, I propose that we reach a consensus. | Por outras palavras, proponho que cheguemos a um consenso. |
Put Another Way
Another useful phrase for getting everyone on the same page is dito de outro modo (put another way).
| Put another way, the negotiation ended today. | Dito de outro modo, a negociação acabou hoje. |
| Put another way, I propose that you speak with him. | Dito de outro modo, proponho que fales com ele. |
