Not only... but also (não só... mas também)

When you want to link two related ideas and emphasize that both are true, use não só... mas também ("not only... but also").

My son has not only English classes, but also swimming classes.
O meu filho tem aulas não só de inglês, mas também de natação.

You will also frequently see como também used instead of mas também. The pair não só... como também means exactly the same thing and they are interchangeable.

The children do not only gymnastics, but also karate.
As crianças fazem não só ginástica, como também karaté.

These structures are very flexible. You can use them to connect nouns, such as different after-school sports and activities:

The girl loves not only judo, but also swimming.
A rapariga adora não só o judo, mas também a natação.

They also work perfectly for connecting adjectives to emphasize dual traits:

The first extracurricular tournament is not only long, but also difficult.
O primeiro torneio extracurricular é não só longo, mas também difícil.

You can even use them to connect longer phrases or direct objects:

They organize not only the swimming competition, but also the football tournament.
Eles organizam não só a competição de natação, como também o torneio de futebol.
