When coordinating tasks with others—like dividing up reading assignments in a book club—you need a way to state who agreed to do what. In Portuguese, we use a special structure with the verb **ficar**.

### Agreeing to do something

To express that someone has agreed or committed to performing an action, use the verb **ficar** followed by the preposition **de** and the infinitive of the action verb (**ficar de** + infinitive). 

Very often, you will use this in the past tense to talk about an arrangement or commitment that was already made.

### Making agreements in the present

You can also use *ficar de* in the present tense to establish an agreement right then and there, or to describe how your group regularly divides up its tasks.
