Questions & Answers about Nikt nigdy nie objechał tej dziury.
The lesson states that verbs with the ob- prefix take the Accusative case. Why is tej dziury in the Genitive case instead?
Excellent observation! You are right that objechać normally takes the Accusative case, as in objechał tę dziurę. However, this sentence is negative (nie objechał). In Polish, whenever a verb that normally takes the Accusative is negated, its direct object automatically switches to the Genitive case. This rule overrides the verb's usual case.
Why are there three negative words (Nikt, nigdy, nie) in a single sentence?
Polish requires multiple negation. Whenever you use negative pronouns or adverbs like nikt (no one) or nigdy (never), you must also put nie in front of the verb. While English considers this a grammatically incorrect double negative, Polish strictly requires all these pieces for the sentence to be correct.
How does the prefix ob- change the base verb jechał?
The base verb jechał is an imperfective verb meaning he was driving or going by vehicle. Adding the prefix ob- does two things: it changes the meaning to bypassing or driving around an obstacle, and it makes the verb perfective, meaning the action of successfully bypassing the hole is viewed as a single, fully completed event.
The lesson title mentions both ob- and obe-. Why do we use ob- here?
