Questions & Answers about Dzisiaj jest trzynasty maja.
Why is trzynasty in the masculine form if there is no masculine noun in the sentence?
It describes the hidden word dzień (day), which is masculine. When giving the date in Polish, you are essentially saying 'the thirteenth (day)', so the ordinal number takes the masculine ending -y.
How does the regular number trzynaście (thirteen) change to become trzynasty (thirteenth)?
For the 'teen' numbers from 13 to 19, you drop the -ście ending from the regular number and add -sty to make it an ordinal number.
Why does the month end in '-a' (maja) instead of just being maj?
When giving a complete date, the month takes the Genitive case because you are literally saying 'the thirteenth day of May'. For most months, the Genitive case is formed by adding -a to the end.
Is it a typo that maja isn't capitalized?
No, it is correct! Unlike English, Polish does not capitalize the months of the year or days of the week unless they are the first word of a sentence.
