How do we form the word brudniejszy (dirtier) from the basic adjective brudny (dirty)?
To make regular adjectives comparative (like adding "-er" in English), you usually add the ending -szy or -ejszy. Because the root of brudny ends in a double consonant (-dn-), it takes -ejszy to make it easier to pronounce. We drop the original -y and add the new ending, resulting in brudniejszy.
Why does the comparative adjective end in -y (brudniejszy) here instead of -a or -e?
Adjectives in the comparative form still have to match the gender of the noun they describe. Since pokój (room) is a masculine noun, we use the masculine ending -y for the comparative form. If we were talking about a feminine noun like kuchnia (kitchen), it would be brudniejsza.
