Questions & Answers about Proszę mówić wyraźnie.
How is the adverb wyraźnie formed from its adjective?
The adjective is wyraźny. Many adjectives ending in -ny form their adverb by changing to -nie. This drops the -y, adds the -e adverb ending, and softens the n sound to ni. Keep in mind that some other -ny adjectives take an -o ending instead (like trudny becoming trudno), so you often just have to memorize which ending a word takes.
Why do we use the infinitive mówić instead of conjugating it?
When you use proszę to make a polite request, it is followed by the verb in its infinitive (dictionary) form. While proszę mówić translates literally as 'I ask to speak', it is the standard Polish way to tell someone 'Please speak'.
Why does wyraźnie use ni instead of the letter ń?
In Polish spelling, when the soft 'ń' sound is followed by a vowel like e, it is always written as ni. You will never see ń directly before a vowel. Therefore, the word is spelled wyraźnie and not wyraźńe.
Could I use the adverb jasno here to mean 'clearly'?
It would change the meaning. wyraźnie means physically clear, like pronouncing your words distinctly so they can be heard. jasno means logically clear, so mówić jasno would mean explaining your ideas so they are easy to understand.
