Why is "our family" in the Genitive case (naszej rodziny) instead of the Accusative case (naszą rodzinę)?
In Polish, most verbs take the Accusative case for their direct object. However, a special group of verbs requires the Genitive case instead. Bronić (to defend) is one of these verbs. Whenever you defend something or someone, that noun must be in the Genitive.
How do the endings change to make nasza rodzina Genitive?
Both words are feminine singular. The pronoun nasza changes its -a ending to -ej, becoming naszej. The noun rodzina changes its -a ending to -y, becoming rodziny.
