Czy mieliście jakiś problem?

Questions & Answers about Czy mieliście jakiś problem?

Why is the verb form mieliście and not mialiście?
The verb mieć (to have) changes its stem vowel in the past tense. For most forms, it uses an 'a' (like miał, miała, miały). But for the masculine personal plural (a group with at least one man), the 'a' changes to an 'e', giving us mieli. Add the ending -ście for 'you (plural)', and you get mieliście.
How would this sentence change if I were asking a group of only women?
If you are talking to a group of women, you use the non-masculine personal form. The verb stem keeps the 'a' vowel instead of changing to 'e', so the sentence becomes Czy miałyście jakiś problem?
Why use jakiś here, and what does it mean in this context?
Jakiś literally means 'some' or 'some kind of', but in Polish questions, it is the most natural way to say 'any'. While you could just ask Czy mieliście problem?, adding jakiś makes it sound exactly like asking 'Did you have any problem?' in English.
Why don't the words jakiś problem change their endings for the accusative case here?
They actually are in the accusative case because they are the direct object of the verb. However, problem is a masculine inanimate noun. For these nouns, the accusative form looks exactly the same as the basic nominative (dictionary) form.
