Questions & Answers about Proszę usiąść tutaj.
Why does this sentence use the infinitive usiąść instead of a command like "sit"?
In Polish, the word proszę literally means "I ask" or "I request". When you want to politely tell someone to do something, the easiest and most common way is to use proszę followed directly by the dictionary form (the infinitive) of the verb. So literally, you are saying "I request to sit down".
I previously learned the word siedzieć for "to sit". Why do we use usiąść here?
Siedzieć describes being in a sitting position for a period of time, like sitting at a desk all day. Usiąść describes the physical action of taking a seat. Since you are asking someone to perform the one-time action of sitting down right now, you use usiąść.
Is this something I would say to a friend?
This phrase is polite and formal, making it perfect for guests, customers, or strangers. If you were talking to a close friend, family member, or a child, you would usually skip proszę and use a direct, informal command like usiądź tutaj.
What does the ć at the end of usiąść do?
The ć makes a soft "ch" sound and is the standard ending for almost all Polish verbs in their dictionary form (the infinitive). Whenever you look up an action word, or use one right after proszę, you will notice it almost always ends in ć.
