Questions & Answers about Północ jest cicha.
Why does the adjective cicha end in "-a"?
Adjectives in Polish must match the gender of the noun they describe. Because the noun północ is feminine, the base masculine adjective cichy (quiet) changes to its feminine form, cicha.
But północ ends in a consonant. Doesn't that usually make it a masculine noun?
Is północ made up of two different words?
Yes, it is a combination of pół (half) and noc (night). It literally translates to "half-night", which makes it easy to remember. Interestingly, północ is also the Polish word for the direction "North".
Can I use this exact sentence to mean "At midnight, it is quiet"?
Not quite. This sentence means the time of midnight itself has the quality of being quiet. If you want to say that it is quiet at a specific time, you would say O północy jest cicho, which uses the "at" structure and the adverb form cicho.
