Questions & Answers about Ta świeczka jest bardzo ładna.
Why do we use ta instead of ten or to here?
Ta is the feminine form of the word for "this". We use it because the noun it points to, świeczka (candle), is feminine. You can usually spot a feminine noun because it ends in the letter "a".
Why does the word for pretty, ładna, end in "a"?
In Polish, adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Because świeczka is feminine, the adjective takes its feminine form, ładna, rather than the masculine form ładny.
Do I always have to use jest in a sentence like this?
Yes! While some languages let you drop the word for "is" in simple descriptions, Polish requires the verb być (to be) here. You need jest to connect the candle to its description.
