Questions & Answers about Czy nauczyciel rozumie młodego chłopca?
Why does the word for boy change to chłopca here?
Chłopca is the direct object, which is the person receiving the action (being understood). In Polish, when a masculine living being (an animate noun) is the direct object, it takes the Accusative case. For most of these nouns, you add an -a to the end.
Where did the 'e' go? The dictionary word is chłopiec.
Polish often drops a weak e in the last syllable when an ending is added. So, chłopiec drops the e and adds the -a ending to become chłopca. You might remember this same thing happening with pies (dog) turning into psa.
Why does the adjective młodego end in -ego?
Adjectives must match the noun they describe. Because chłopca is masculine, animate, and in the Accusative case, the dictionary word młody (young) has to change to match it. For masculine animate adjectives in the Accusative case, the ending is always -ego.
Nauczyciel (teacher) is also a masculine person. Why didn't it change to the Accusative case?
Nauczyciel is the subject of the sentence, meaning he is the one doing the understanding. The subject always stays in its basic dictionary form (the Nominative case). Only the direct object (the one being understood) changes to the Accusative case.
