Questions & Answers about Ponieważ oskarżony milczał, sędzia zapytał o coś innego.
How does the word oskarżony function here, and how would it change if the defendant was a woman?
Oskarżony is a substantivized participle. It is originally a passive participle from the verb oskarżyć (to accuse), but here it acts as a noun meaning 'the accused'. Because it still declines exactly like an adjective, a female defendant would be oskarżona, and a mixed-gender group of defendants would be oskarżeni.
Sędzia ends in '-a'. Is it feminine, and how does it decline?
Sędzia (judge) is masculine, despite the -a ending. It has a highly irregular declension that B2 learners should memorize: it mixes adjectival endings (like genitive and accusative sędziego, dative sędziemu) with feminine-noun endings (like instrumental sędzią, locative sędzi).
Why is the phrase o coś innego used here instead of just o coś inne?
The verb zapytać takes the preposition o plus the accusative case to mean 'to ask about'. Although coś is neuter, indefinite pronouns like coś and nic are special: any adjective modifying them takes the -ego ending (which looks like the genitive), even in the nominative or accusative cases. Therefore, we say coś innego (something else) rather than coś inne.
Why is milczał imperfective while zapytał is perfective?
