Looking At
To say you are looking at something or someone, use the verb patrzeć followed by the preposition na. The noun that follows must be in the Accusative case.
| I would like to look at this beautiful moon. | Chciałbym patrzeć na ten piękny księżyc. |
| The student is looking impatiently at the board. | Studentka niecierpliwie patrzy na tablicę. |
Waiting For
In English, we wait for things, but in Polish, the verb czekać (to wait) uses the exact same structure as looking. Use czekać na plus the Accusative case.
| They are waiting impatiently for the signal. | Oni niecierpliwie czekają na sygnał. |
| My child always waits for a surprise. | Moje dziecko zawsze czeka na niespodziankę. |
If you are waiting for a person or an animal, remember that masculine animate nouns in the Accusative case take the same endings as they do in the Genitive case.
| Your brother is waiting for the courier with the package. | Twój brat czeka na kuriera z paczką. |
Scenes and Abstract Concepts
You will frequently see these verbs used to describe observing natural scenes or awaiting abstract concepts, like looking to the future (przyszłość). The grammatical rule remains exactly the same.
| We are looking at the horizon and waiting for the sunrise. | My patrzymy na horyzont i czekamy na wschód słońca. |
| The family is looking at the future with hope. | Rodzina z nadzieją patrzy na przyszłość. |
