Verbs of dispersal and undoing (roz-, roze-)

Dispersal and undoing: roz- and roze-

In Polish, adding the prefix roz- (or roze- when the verb root starts with certain consonant clusters) adds the meaning of spreading out, scattering, taking things apart, or undoing an action.

Spilling and scattering (rozlać, rozsypać)

When dealing with messes, Polish distinguishes between liquids and solids. Use rozlać for spilling liquids and rozsypać for scattering or spilling dry things, like sugar or toys. The spilled object takes the Accusative case, but remember the standard negation rule: negating the verb switches the direct object to the Genitive case.

My brother spilled water on the floor.
Mój brat rozlał wodę na podłogę.
Do not spill the milk!
Nie rozlej mleka!
Someone spilled sugar on the table.
Ktoś rozsypał cukier na stole.

Undoing and dismantling (rozpakować, rozebrać)

The prefix often reverses an action. Just as you can pack a bag, you can unpack (rozpakować) it. When dealing with complex structures or machinery, the verb rozebrać means to dismantle or take something apart piece by piece.

When will you unpack your suitcase?
Kiedy rozpakujesz swoją walizkę?
The mechanic must dismantle the engine.
Mechanik musi rozebrać silnik.

Unfolding and separating (rozłożyć, rozdzielić)

When you want to spread something out flat or open it up for use, such as a tent or a map, use rozłożyć. To separate people or objects into distinct parts or groups, use rozdzielić.

Let's set up the tent in the forest.
Rozłóżmy namiot w lesie.
We have to separate these two groups.
Musimy rozdzielić te dwie grupy.

Throwing around and disconnecting (rozrzucić, rozłączyć)

To throw things in multiple directions, creating disorder, use rozrzucić. If things are physically or electronically joined together—like cables—you use rozłączyć to disconnect or separate them.

Why did you throw clothes around the room?
Dlaczego rozrzuciłeś ubrania po pokoju?
You have to disconnect this cable.
Musisz rozłączyć ten kabel.

Cutting open and melting (rozciąć, roztopić)

Finally, the prefix can indicate breaking a surface or changing a physical state. Rozciąć means to cut something open, while roztopić means to melt something, causing it to lose its solid shape.

I cut my finger open with a knife.
Rozciąłem sobie palec nożem.
The sun melted the snow on the roof.
Słońce roztopiło śnieg na dachu.
