In an affirmative sentence, dopóki means "as long as" or "while." It is useful for laying out ground rules, such as the terms of a tenancy (wynajem) or paying rent (czynsz) on time (terminowo).
| As long as you pay rent on time, you can live here. | Dopóki płacisz czynsz terminowo, możesz tu mieszkać. |
| As long as I am the owner, you must not make noise here. | Dopóki jestem właścicielem, nie wolno tu hałasować. |

Until
To express "until," Polish combines dopóki with the negative particle nie—literally "as long as [an event] does not happen."

Following the rules
When discussing rental agreements, you can also use standard "if" conditions (jeśli or jeżeli) to set consequences for following rules (zasada) and returning the deposit (kaucja), or for making noise (hałasować).
