Using aż (Until)
To express that an action continues "until" a specific event happens, use the conjunction aż. Always place a comma immediately before aż when it introduces a new clause.
| We are waiting for the visa until the consulate issues the decision. | Czekamy na wizę, aż konsulat wyda decyzję. |
| You must wait until the clerk checks the copy of the passport. | Musisz czekać, aż urzędnik sprawdzi kopię paszportu. |
Aż works identically in the past tense to describe an event that finally ended a wait:
| I waited for the stamp all night until the clerk came. | Czekałem na pieczątkę całą noc, aż przyszedł urzędnik. |
| We stood in front of the consulate until we received the visas. | Staliśmy przed konsulatem, aż dostaliśmy wizy. |
It is also common in negative sentences or descriptions of long procedures to show a condition that must be met:
| They will not issue citizenship until the procedure is finished. | Nie wydadzą obywatelstwa, aż procedura się skończy. |
| This procedure takes a long time, so you must wait until they issue the document. | Ta procedura trwa długo, więc musisz czekać, aż wydadzą dokument. |
