The prefix for shared actions (współ-)

The Prefix współ- for Shared Roles and Concepts

When building a business or working on a joint venture, you rarely do it alone. In Polish, the prefix współ- is used to express collaboration, shared status, or joint participation. It is the direct equivalent of the English prefix "co-".

You can attach współ- to the beginning of a noun to describe people who share a role (such as a co-founder or co-worker) or abstract concepts that involve multiple parties (like co-responsibility or co-participation). The resulting compound is written as a single solid word, and it declines exactly like its base noun.

This young entrepreneur is the co-founder of our startup.
Ten młody przedsiębiorca jest współzałożycielem naszego startupu.
Our bosses are the co-owners of the company.
Nasi szefowie są współwłaścicielami firmy.
What kind of business model is it? It requires co-responsibility.
Jaki to jest model biznesowy? On wymaga współodpowiedzialności.

The Prefix współ- for Shared Actions

The prefix współ- is just as productive with verbs to indicate that an action is being performed jointly. You will frequently see it attached to verbs like tworzyć (to create), finansować (to finance), or dzielić (to divide). Note that współdzielić is often simply translated as "to share".

Just as with nouns, the prefix merges with the base verb to form one word. The new verb conjugates exactly the same way the base verb does.

Are you co-creating this modern startup?
Czy współtworzycie ten nowoczesny startup?
Our directors are co-financing this business.
Nasi dyrektorowie współfinansują ten biznes.
We want to share an office with these entrepreneurs.
Chcemy współdzielić biuro z tymi przedsiębiorcami.
