The suffix of indifference: -kolwiek
In Polish, you can turn a basic question word into a word of indifference or open-endedness by adding the suffix -kolwiek. It works much like adding "-ever" or "any-" in English. This is perfect for talking about spontaneous travel, flexible plans, and making choices where the specifics do not matter.
Ktokolwiek and Cokolwiek
By attaching -kolwiek to the pronouns kto (who) and co (what), you create the words for "whoever/anyone" and "whatever/anything".
| Whoever has a ticket can get on the train. | Ktokolwiek ma bilet, może wejść do pociągu. |
| I can do anything, because this is a spontaneous trip. | Mogę zrobić cokolwiek, bo to jest spontaniczny wyjazd. |
Gdziekolwiek and Kiedykolwiek
Similarly, you can attach the suffix to adverbs of place and time. Gdzie (where) becomes gdziekolwiek (wherever/anywhere), and kiedy (when) becomes kiedykolwiek (whenever/anytime).
| We can go anywhere, for example by train. | Możemy jechać gdziekolwiek, na przykład pociągiem. |
| You can arrive anytime, I am flexible. | Możesz przyjechać kiedykolwiek, jestem elastyczny. |
Jakikolwiek
The word jakikolwiek means "any" or "whichever". Because it is built from the adjective jaki (what kind), it must decline to match the gender, number, and case of the noun it describes.
When declining, only the jaki- part changes its endings. The -kolwiek suffix remains locked in place at the very end of the word.
