Full exact dates
When recounting the lives of your great-grandfather (pradziadek) or great-grandmother (prababcia), you will often need to state the exact date they were born.
In Polish, stating a year by itself requires the preposition w and the Locative case (e.g., w tysiąc osiemset osiemdziesiątym roku). However, when you state a full exact date—combining the day, month, and year—you drop the preposition w and shift entirely to the Genitive case:
- The day is an ordinal number in the Genitive (e.g., drugiego
- on the second).
- The month is in the Genitive (e.g., maja
- of May).
- The year is an ordinal number in the Genitive, ending with roku (e.g., tysiąc osiemset osiemdziesiątego roku).
| My great-grandfather was born on the second of May eighteen eighty. | Mój pradziadek urodził się drugiego maja tysiąc osiemset osiemdziesiątego roku. |
| After all, our great-grandmother was born on the twentieth of July nineteen twelve. | Przecież nasza prababcia urodziła się dwudziestego lipca tysiąc dziewięćset dwunastego roku. |
Archival records
When building a family tree, you might visit an archive (archiwum) to track down (odnaleźć) proof of your ancestors' lives in old records.
| I was supposed to check this archive on the third of August two thousand and one. | Miałem sprawdzić to archiwum trzeciego sierpnia dwa tysiące pierwszego roku. |
| I found proof that he was born on the eighth of January eighteen fifty. | Odnalazłem dowód, że urodził się ósmego stycznia tysiąc osiemset pięćdziesiątego roku. |
Births, baptisms, and funerals
A historical register (księga) will help you confirm key life events such as births (narodziny), baptisms (chrzest), and funerals (pogrzeb).
Note that narodziny (birth) is a plural-only noun, much like urodziny (birthday).

Visiting the cemetery
Finally, your research might take you to a cemetery (cmentarz) to locate an old tombstone (nagrobek).
