Expressing Duration: How long?
To state how long an action lasts, use the preposition przez (for) followed by the length of time in the Accusative case.
For feminine nouns ending in -a, remember to change the ending to -ę in the Accusative:
- chwila (moment) becomes chwilę
- sekunda (second) becomes sekundę
- godzina (hour) becomes godzinę

Enduring and Complaining
Use przez to talk about enduring tedious situations or complaining during a long wait. Key verbs for these situations include wytrzymać (to endure) and narzekać (to complain).
| I cannot endure this for one second. | Nie mogę tego wytrzymać przez jedną sekundę. |
| The drivers complained in traffic jams for an hour. | Kierowcy przez godzinę narzekali w korkach. |
Surviving Longer Events
When describing how you survived (przetrwać) longer challenges, such as a tedious speech or bad weather, you can combine przez with adjectives like cały (whole). The entire time phrase must take the Accusative case.
| How did you survive this speech? We listened to it for two hours. | Jak przetrwałeś to przemówienie? Słuchaliśmy go przez dwie godziny. |
| We survived the storm because we stayed at home for the whole day. | Przetrwaliśmy burzę, bo zostaliśmy w domu przez cały dzień. |
