Equative sentences with 'to'

Saying "A is B" with "to"

In English, when we want to state that one thing is another, we use the verb "to be" (for example, "A noun is a word"). In Polish, there is a wonderfully simple shortcut for these "Noun is Noun" sentences: the particle to.

When you use to to connect two nouns, you do not need a conjugated verb. Both nouns stay in their basic, dictionary form (the Nominative case). Let's learn this structure by defining some basic grammar terms.

Nouns and Verbs

To say "A noun is a word", simply put to right between the two nouns. In the examples below, you will also see the word a, which translates to "and" or "while" and is used to lightly contrast two statements.

A noun is an important word, and a verb is the main word.
Rzeczownik to ważne słowo, a czasownik to główne słowo.
The word "dog" is a noun, and the word "to sleep" is a verb.
Słowo „pies” to rzeczownik, a słowo „spać” to czasownik.

Conjunctions: więc and zatem

When building logical definitions, you will often use conjunctions like więc (so) and zatem (therefore) to connect your thoughts.

The word "good" is an adjective, therefore the word "well" is an adverb.
Słowo „dobry” to przymiotnik, zatem słowo „dobrze” to przysłówek.
An adjective is a long word, so an adverb is also a long word.
Przymiotnik to długie słowo, więc przysłówek to też długie słowo.

Pronouns and Prepositions

A pronoun is a zaimek, and a preposition is a przyimek. Notice how the to particle keeps these equative sentences crisp and straightforward.

The word "we" is a pronoun, and the word "to" is a preposition.
Słowo „my” to zaimek, a słowo „do” to przyimek.
A pronoun is a small word, so a preposition is also a small word.
Zaimek to małe słowo, więc przyimek to też małe słowo.

Subjects, Predicates, and Sounds

The subject of a sentence is the podmiot, and the predicate is the orzeczenie.

Usually a verb is the predicate, and a noun is the subject.
Zwykle czasownik to orzeczenie, a rzeczownik to podmiot.

Finally, when talking about the sounds that make up words, a vowel is a samogłoska and a consonant is a spółgłoska.

A vowel is a beautiful sound, and a consonant is a difficult sound.
Samogłoska to piękny dźwięk, a spółgłoska to trudny dźwięk.
A short vowel is only just the beginning of the word, and a consonant is the end.
Krótka samogłoska to dopiero początek słowa, a spółgłoska to koniec.
