Adjective position: Before or after the noun?
In Polish, an adjective's position tells you what kind of job it is doing:
- Descriptive adjectives go before the noun, just like in English. They express opinions, physical traits, or temporary states (size, age, price, temperature).
- Classifying adjectives go after the noun. They define a specific category, type, or official name, telling us what kind of thing it is.
The Adjective Sandwich
When using both types of adjectives, the noun goes right in the middle:
[Descriptive Adjective] + [Noun] + [Classifying Adjective]
For example, "sparkling" (gazowana) classifies the type of water, creating the fixed phrase woda gazowana. If you want to specify that the water is cold (zimna), that description goes in front.
| I was supposed to buy cold sparkling water. | Miałem kupić zimną wodę gazowaną. |
| I want a large iced coffee. | Chcę dużą kawę mrożoną. |
Vehicles and Civic Institutions
Classifying adjectives are common in official names for vehicles, places, and institutions.
A passenger car is a samochód osobowy, and a freight truck is a samochód ciężarowy. Notice how descriptive adjectives like drogi (expensive) and stary (old) sit at the front.
| This is an expensive passenger car. | To jest drogi samochód osobowy. |
| An old truck is standing in front of the house. | Stary samochód ciężarowy stoi przed domem. |
The same rule applies to civic spaces. Words like "city" (miejski), "public" (publiczny), and "state" (państwowy) act as classifying adjectives and always follow the noun.
| Is this new city hospital already open? | Czy ten nowy szpital miejski jest już otwarty? |
| My sister studied at a famous state university. | Moja siostra studiowała na znanym uniwersytecie państwowym. |
Official Categories: Tickets and Schools
A regular ticket is an official category (bilet normalny), as is a concession or reduced ticket (bilet ulgowy). When you add a description, the sandwich pattern applies.
| A regular ticket is more expensive than a concession ticket. | Bilet normalny jest droższy niż bilet ulgowy. |
| Who can buy a cheap concession ticket? | Kto może kupić tani bilet ulgowy? |
Primary school is officially categorized as szkoła podstawowa. By placing a descriptive adjective like dobra (good) in front, you follow the exact same pattern.
| Before he went to high school, he had to finish a good primary school. | Zanim poszedł do liceum, musiał skończyć dobrą szkołę podstawową. |
