Doing Something For Yourself: "sobie"
In Polish, when you do something for your own benefit, you use the benefactive reflexive pronoun sobie. This is the Dative form of the reflexive pronoun się, and it translates to "for myself," "for yourself," "for themselves," and so on, depending on who is performing the action.
| to oneself / oneself (after a preposition) | sobie |
You will often see sobie used with everyday actions to emphasize that the task is a personal treat or done for your own comfort, such as preparing a meal or a hot bath (kąpiel). Note that sobie never changes form; it remains exactly the same regardless of who the subject is.
Buying and Treating Yourself
Sobie is frequently paired with verbs like kupić (to buy) or zrobić (to make/do) when talking about small indulgences. You can use it to say you bought yourself your favorite (ulubiony) drink or gave yourself a little pleasure (przyjemność).
Self-care and Taking a Break
When talking about self-care routines in the living room (salon) or taking a moment to relax, sobie adds a cozy, self-indulgent tone. You can use it when applying (nałożyć) a face mask (maseczka) or taking a break.
Making Promises to Yourself
Finally, just as in English, you can use sobie with verbs of commitment, such as promising (obiecać) yourself a reward after a long day.
