Usages of byouki

かれ は おもい びょう に かかって います。kare wa omoi byouki ni kakatte imasu.
He came down with a serious illness.
かのじょ の  は こころ の びょう を って いました。kanojo no sobo wa kokoro no byouki o motte imashita.
Her grandmother had a heart disease.

Using って いる suggests that the condition or disease is chronic, whereas かかって いる is neutral with respect to duration.

ガン は こわい びょう です。gan wa kowai byouki desu.
Cancer is a frightening disease.
ども の とき、 よく びょう に なりました。kodomo no toki, yoku byouki ni narimashita.
I used to get sick often when I was a child.
