Why is it just mille and not un mille for "a thousand"?
In Italian, you don't need to add a word for "a" or "one" before 1,000. While in English we say "a thousand" or "one thousand", in Italian you just say mille.
Wait, the singular is problema. Shouldn't the plural be probleme instead of problemi?
It's a very common exception! Usually, nouns ending in -a are feminine and change to -e in the plural. But problema is masculine (il problema). Because it's masculine, it follows the rule for masculine words and changes its ending to -i in the plural, becoming i problemi.
Do I pronounce the "H" in Ho?
No, the letter "H" is always silent in Italian. You pronounce ho exactly like the vowel o. The written "H" is just there to show it's the verb "I have" rather than the word o (which means "or").
What if I wanted to say "two thousand problems"? Would I still use mille?
For exactly one thousand, you always use mille. But if you are counting multiples of a thousand, the word changes to mila. So "two thousand problems" would be duemila problemi.
