Questions & Answers about L'orologio vecchio è nero.
Why is the article L' instead of Il or Lo here?
Why does vecchio (old) come after orologio (watch) instead of before it?
In English, we usually put describing words (adjectives) before the noun, like 'old watch'. In Italian, descriptive adjectives like vecchio almost always come directly after the noun they describe.
Notice how orologio, vecchio, and nero all end in 'o'. Is that a coincidence?
Not at all! Orologio is a masculine singular noun. Any adjectives that describe it, like vecchio (old) and nero (black), must match its gender and number. Since they are regular adjectives, they both take the masculine singular ending -o.
Why does è have an accent mark?
The accent mark changes the meaning of the word entirely. With the accent, è means 'is' (from the verb for 'to be'). Without the accent mark, e simply means 'and'.
