To say why you do something, use **per** + the **infinitive** — the verb form ending in *-are*, *-ere* or *-ire*. It corresponds to English "to" or "in order to":

The verb after **per** is always the infinitive, never a conjugated form: *Esco per mangiare*, never *Esco per mangio*. English "for buying" does not transfer either: *per comprare*, never *per comprando*.
