Saying why (per + infinitive)

To say why you do something, use per + the infinitive — the verb form ending in -are, -ere or -ire. It corresponds to English "to" or "in order to":

I study Italian in order to speak with my friends.
Studio l'italiano per parlare con i miei amici.
We go to the market to buy bread.
Andiamo al mercato per comprare il pane.

The verb after per is always the infinitive, never a conjugated form: Esco per mangiare, never Esco per mangio. English "for buying" does not transfer either: per comprare, never per comprando.

I go out to eat at the restaurant.
Esco per mangiare al ristorante.
Marco comes to Rome to learn Italian.
Marco viene a Roma per imparare l'italiano.

Both actions share one subject: Marco comes and Marco learns.

I go to the cafe to see my friends.
Vado al bar per vedere gli amici.
We work in order to buy a house.
Lavoriamo per comprare una casa.
I return home to eat with my family.
Torno a casa per mangiare con la mia famiglia.
