Possessives with family exceptions

Possessives and Family: When to Keep the Article

Normally, singular close family members drop the definite article when used with a possessive (e.g., mio padre, tua madre). However, there are several important exceptions where you must keep the article.

1. Plural Family Members

The "no article" rule only applies to singular nouns. Plural family members—whether close or extended—always require the definite article.

I would have liked to meet his stepsisters.
Avrei voluto incontrare le sue sorellastre.

2. Extended Family (Suffixes)

Nouns referring to blended family members often end in suffixes like -astro or -igno. Grammatically, these are considered modified nouns and require the definite article.

My stepmother should have accepted him.
La mia matrigna lo avrebbe dovuto accettare.
Your stepfather and my stepson met each other.
Il tuo patrigno e il mio figliastro si sono incontrati.

3. Terms of Endearment (Diminutives)

Similarly, if you use a diminutive suffix to express affection—such as turning nipote into nipotino (little grandson / nephew)—you must keep the article.

My little grandson is a descendant of a noble lineage.
Il mio nipotino è un discendente di una nobile stirpe.

4. Adding Adjectives

If a family member is accompanied by a descriptive adjective, such as adottivo (adoptive), the article is required.

My adoptive parents invited my stepsister.
I miei genitori adottivi hanno invitato la mia sorellastra.

5. The Possessive Loro

The possessive loro (their) is entirely inflexible. It always takes the definite article, even with singular, unmodified family members.

The orphan is their cousin.
L'orfano è il loro cugino.
Their adoptive son would have preferred to stay here.
Il loro figlio adottivo avrebbe preferito restare qui.

Ancestry and Lineage

Words describing ancestry or descendants behave like regular nouns, rather than close family members. They always take the definite article with a possessive.

Their lineage is very ancient.
La loro stirpe è molto antica.
Their descendants live abroad.
I loro discendenti vivono all'estero.
