### The Silent Archive: Negative Indefinites

In the hushed atmosphere of an ancient archive, you will often find yourself talking about what *isn't* there. Italian uses negative indefinite pronouns and adverbs like **nessuno** (nobody), **niente** (nothing), and **mai** (never).

The rule for these words depends entirely on where they sit in the sentence.

### Before the Verb: Standing Alone

When **nessuno** or **niente** is placed *before* the verb, it acts as a standalone negative. You do **not** use the word *non*.

### After the Verb: The Double Negative

If the negative indefinite comes *after* the verb, Italian requires a "double negative." You must place **non** *before* the verb.
