Questions & Answers about Vorið er mjög fallegt og bjart.
Why do we say vorið (the spring) instead of just vor (spring) here?
When talking about a season in a general sense, like describing what spring is like, Icelandic uses the definite article. Since vor is a neuter noun, it becomes vorið. English usually drops the word 'the' and just says 'Spring is...', but Icelandic keeps it!
Why do the adjectives fallegt and bjart both end in -t?
Adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Because vor is a neuter noun, the adjectives drop their default masculine -ur endings (fallegur, bjartur) and take the neuter -t ending instead to become fallegt and bjart.
Would I capitalize vor in the middle of a sentence since it is a season?
No, you wouldn't. In Icelandic, seasons, months, and days of the week are not capitalized unless they happen to be the very first word of a sentence.
Are all four seasons neuter nouns like vor?
Vor (spring), sumar (summer), and haust (autumn) are all neuter nouns, so they all take the -ið ending for 'the'. However, vetur (winter) is a masculine noun, so it becomes veturinn (the winter).
