Questions & Answers about Súpan er vond en pitsan er fín.
Why do súpan and pitsan end in -n?
In Icelandic, "the" is attached to the end of the noun instead of being a separate word before it. The base words are súpa (soup) and pitsa (pizza). Because they are feminine nouns that end in a vowel, they take the suffix -n to mean "the soup" and "the pizza".
Why are the adjectives vond and fín missing their usual dictionary endings?
Adjectives in Icelandic change their endings to match the gender of the noun they describe. The dictionary forms, which are masculine, are vondur (bad) and fínn (fine/good). Since súpa and pitsa are both feminine nouns, the adjectives drop their masculine endings to become vond and fín.
Does fín mean "just okay" like "fine" often does in English?
While it looks and sounds like the English word "fine", fín usually carries a more positive meaning in Icelandic. It often translates to "good", "great", or "excellent" when talking about food, rather than just being merely acceptable.
Why use en instead of og in this sentence?
The word en usually translates to "but". It is used here because the sentence contrasts two opposite ideas: the soup is bad, but the pizza is good. You would use og (and) if you were just listing things without contrasting them.
