Questions & Answers about Hætt að spila!
Why is the command "stop" written as Hætt here instead of Hættu?
Hætt is the pure command form of the verb hætta. The word you often hear, hættu, is actually formed by merging hætt with the pronoun þú (you). Both mean the exact same thing, though hættu is much more common in everyday speech.
Why is the word að used here when the English translation ends in "-ing"?
In English, we say "stop playing" using the "-ing" form. Icelandic doesn't use its "-ing" equivalent this way. Instead, when a verb follows hætta (to stop), it must be in the dictionary form (infinitive) and requires the little marker að right before it.
Does spila mean any kind of playing?
No, spila is specifically used for playing games (like cards or board games), sports, or musical instruments. If you want to tell kids to stop playing around with toys, you would use the verb leika.
