Questions & Answers about Tónlistin hér er skemmtileg.
Why isn't the dative case used in this sentence, since this lesson is about phrases like mér finnst?
This is a regular descriptive sentence using er (is), so the subject tónlistin (the music) is in the basic nominative case. If you wanted to use the lesson's grammar and say "I find the music here fun," you would say Mér finnst tónlistin hér skemmtileg. In that case, mér (to me) is your new dative subject, but tónlistin stays nominative as the object being described!
How do we get the word tónlistin?
In Icelandic, the word for "the" is attached to the end of the noun. Tónlist (music) is a feminine word, so it takes the feminine definite article -in, becoming tónlistin (the music).
Why does the adjective skemmtileg end in -leg instead of -legt?
Adjectives have to match the noun they describe. Because tónlistin is a feminine, singular noun in the nominative case, the adjective must use its matching feminine form, which is skemmtileg. If it were describing a neuter noun, you would see skemmtilegt instead.
Can hér go at the very end of the sentence?
Yes, you could absolutely say Tónlistin er skemmtileg hér. However, placing hér right after the noun is a very common and natural way in Icelandic to group the words together to mean "the music here."
