Questions & Answers about Ekki labba með ólina inn.
Why does með take the accusative case (ólina) here instead of the dative?
Normally, með takes the dative case when it means "together with" or "using a tool". However, when it implies bringing, carrying, or leading something from one place to another, it shifts to taking the accusative. Because you are transporting the leash inside, it triggers the accusative.
Why is the verb labba in its infinitive form rather than an imperative form like labbaðu?
In Icelandic, negative commands are simply formed by putting ekki in front of the infinitive form of the verb. If this were a positive command, you would use the imperative form, but the negative construction always forces the infinitive.
Why do we use inn instead of inni for "inside"?
Inn is the directional form of the adverb, used here because there is active movement toward the inside. You use the stative form inni only when the subject is already stationary inside a location.
What kind of "strap" does ólina usually refer to in this type of everyday context?
While ól literally translates to a strap or belt, it is the standard Icelandic word for a dog leash. This sentence is a very common household instruction telling someone not to bring the dog leash indoors.
