Question 1

Why is the verb hverfi in the subjunctive here instead of the indicative hverfa?

Accepted Answer

The phrase til þess að introduces a purpose clause. Because the subject of this clause (skuggarnir) is different from the main clause (tökumaðurinn), we must use a full subordinate clause. Purpose clauses like this require the subjunctive mood to indicate an intended outcome rather than a stated fact.

Question 2

Could we just use an infinitive and say til þess að hverfa skuggarnir?

Accepted Answer

No, because the subject changes. You only use til þess að plus the infinitive when the subject doing both actions is the same. Since the cameraman is buying but the shadows are disappearing, you must introduce the new subject (skuggarnir) and conjugate the verb in the subjunctive.

Question 3

I learned the word hverfi as a noun meaning neighborhood. Is it related here?

Accepted Answer

They look identical but are different words. In this sentence, hverfi is the third-person plural present subjunctive form of the strong verb hverfa (to disappear). It is just a coincidence that it shares a spelling with the neuter noun hverfi (neighborhood).

Question 4

Why does nýjan kastara end in these specific suffixes?

Accepted Answer

It is the direct object of the verb kaupir (buys), which requires the accusative case. The noun kastari (spotlight) is a weak masculine noun, so its accusative form ends in -a. The adjective nýr (new) must agree with it, taking the masculine singular accusative ending -jan.
