Learn Icelandic: Sérhvert skref á framleiðslulínunni er mikilvægt. - Every single step on the production line is important.

Sérhver declines to match the gender, number, and case of the noun it modifies. Since skref (step) is a neuter noun in the nominative case, the pronoun takes the neuter nominative form sérhvert.

How does sérhvert skref differ in meaning from just saying hvert skref or öll skref?

While hvert skref means each step and öll skref means all steps, adding the prefix sér- creates a distributive pronoun that emphasizes every single individual part of a whole. It strongly highlights that absolutely no step can be skipped.

Why is framleiðslulínunni in the dative case after á?

The preposition á can take either the accusative or dative case. Here it takes the dative because it describes a fixed location or state (where the step occurs) rather than movement towards a destination.

How is the compound word framleiðslulínunni formed?

It combines framleiðsla (production) and lína (line). When joining them, framleiðsla drops its final -a and takes a genitive -u ending to connect the words, forming framleiðslulína. The -nni at the end is the feminine singular definite article in the dative case.
